₹12.2 Lakh Crore for Infrastructure: Which Construction Machines Will Be in Demand?

India is spending more on roads, rail, metro and power than ever before. But money alone doesn’t build anything. Machines do.

Here is where the money is going, the full range of machines it creates demand for, and what contractors should do about it.

The Money Behind the Machines

Union Budget 2026-27 set public capital spending at a record ₹12.2 lakh crore for FY27, about 9% higher than last year. The biggest shares go to:

  • Transport: ₹5.98 lakh crore
  • Energy: about ₹1.09 lakh crore
  • State infrastructure projects: ₹2 lakh crore under the SASCI scheme
  • Metro expansion: ₹10,000 crore

More projects mean more digging, steel work, concrete, paving and lifting, and each of those needs its own set of machines.

The Machines Behind Every Project

Construction machinery supporting India's infrastructure development

The industry groups construction equipment into five segments. Here is what sits in each one.

Segment Machines in demand
Earthmoving Excavators, mini excavators, backhoe loaders, bulldozers, wheel loaders, motor graders, dumpers
Compaction and road building Walk-behind rollers, ride-on rollers, vibratory road rollers, plate compactors, earth rammers, pavers, milling machines
Concrete Batching plants, transit mixers, concrete pumps, small concrete mixers, screed vibrators, power trowels, bull floats, laser screed machines
Material handling and lifting Tower cranes, crawler cranes, mobile cranes, mini cranes, forklifts, hoists, suspended platforms, pallet trucks
Material processing Stone crushers, screens, aggregate plants

Earthmoving is where most of the budget lands first. You can compare prices and models for backhoe loaders, dozers, motor graders and wheel loaders on Machanx’s EquipmentInfo pages.

Reinforcement steel work needs its own set of machines on almost every project: rebar bending, automatic stirrup bending, ring making, straightening, cutting and threading machines. Add finishing and demolition tools such as concrete cutters, floor grinders, scarifiers and impact wrenches, and a single site can use dozens of machine types.

Which Project Needs What

Project Machines usually in demand
Highways and expressways Excavators, dozers, graders, pavers, rollers, milling machines, crushers, batching plants, transit mixers
Metro and rail Piling rigs, cranes, concrete pumps, transit mixers, rebar bending and threading machines, mini excavators for tight corridors
Bridges and flyovers Cranes, concrete pumps, rebar processing machines, vibrators, suspended platforms
Buildings and housing Tower cranes, mixers, hoists, power trowels, screed machines, suspended platforms, rebar machines
Water and sanitation Backhoe loaders, mini excavators, trenchers, plate compactors, earth rammers
Power and energy Cranes, excavators, concrete equipment, lifting platforms

For tight metro corridors and utility trenches, mini excavators are usually the practical choice. High-rise and facade work relies on suspended platforms.

What the Numbers Say

  • Earthmoving is the biggest segment, with about 71% share at 97,236 units in FY26. Backhoe loaders alone crossed 53,000 units in FY25.
  • Road equipment is growing, up about 6.3% to 7,445 units in FY26, with a 31% jump in Q4.
  • Concrete equipment is picking up, up 9% in Q4 FY26.
  • Material processing posted the strongest Q4 growth at 105%, which signals more crushing and aggregate work ahead.
  • Material handling is the one to watch. It fell about 10% to 15,290 units in FY26, so it has room to recover as sites ramp up.

A Reality Check: FY26 Was Slow

Equipment sales fell about 2% to 1,36,995 units in FY26. Domestic sales dropped around 7%.

The industry body ICEMA blamed slower project execution, not structural weakness. The causes were land acquisition delays, fewer highway awards and late payments to contractors.

Things improved by year-end: Q4 sales rose 4%, and March 2026 grew 6%. The money is there. Speed of execution is the key.

The Long-Term Picture

India is the world’s third-largest construction equipment market, expected to grow from about USD 10 billion in FY25 to USD 14.76 billion by 2030. The Budget also backs local manufacturing of heavy equipment through a new CIE scheme.

5 Smart Moves for Contractors

Construction equipment for infrastructure development in India
  1. Buy for your project type. Metro work needs rebar and concrete machines. Highway work needs walk-behind rollers, pavers and crushers.
  2. Look at the total cost. Spares, service and downtime matter more than the sticker price.
  3. Don’t ignore small machines. A broken bar bender or plate compactor can stop a whole crew. Read our maintenance guide.
  4. Buy from an authorized dealer for genuine spares and warranty. Sona is an authorized XCMG dealer.
  5. Plan your cash flow, since payment delays hit many contractors last year. Renting equipment or hiring operators only when needed keeps fixed costs down.

Quick FAQs

Why does infrastructure spending increase machine demand?

Every project needs machines for digging, compacting, steel work, concrete, paving and lifting.

Which machines are needed for a highway project?

Excavators, dozers, graders, pavers, rollers, crushers, batching plants and transit mixers.

Which machines are needed for a metro project?

Cranes, concrete pumps, transit mixers, rebar bending and threading machines, and compact excavators for tight spaces.

Did equipment sales fall in FY26?

Yes, by about 2% overall, mostly from project delays. Sales recovered in the last quarter.

Mini or full-size excavator?

Mini suits tight urban and utility work. Full-size suits large earthwork. See our full comparison.

Why use machines for rebar instead of manual bending?

Machines are faster, more consistent and reduce dependence on labour. See machine vs manual bending.
